A journey and a destination. Recovery happens here!

The PEERblog

December 2013

Generally, December is the month for the celebratory countdown to the end of one year and the anticipation for what the next year will bring.  At The PEER Center we are always celebrating new steps taken in our recovery journey, or a solid holding of recovery ground gained in previous cycles.  Instead of counting down to the end of 2013, The PEER Center is taking a bold new step, by saying goodbye for now to the Short North where our North Center is located, and saying hello to the Franklinton Area, with the opening of our new West Center at 1114 West Broad St, at the corner of West Broad and Glenwood. In order to accomplish this, our North Center ceased operations on November 29th for packing and moving. The former North Center will experience a rebirth as our new West Center and resume operations on Monday, December 16th, 2013.  So, no winding down for us at all. In fact we are just getting started!!  We are excited about the possibilities for this new endeavor.  These changes also include a few changes to our website. We appreciate your patience as all of our systems and social media make this transition. Generally the calendars for the current month are located on other pages of this website. For December you will find them on this page only.  Click on the links below for the full December schedules.

A few highlights from our December calendars:

Our East Center will close at 5pm on Sunday December 8th for staff training and development. Join us for our annual holiday celebration on Christmas Day at 3pm.  Holiday hours (9am - 7pm) will be observed on December 24th, December 25th, December 31st and January 1st, 2014. Click The PEER Center East-December 2013 for the full schedule.

Our West Center will be operational on Monday, December 16th at 10am. Join us for our "grand opening" and holiday celebration on Friday, December 20th.  Our West Center will be closed on Christmas Day and New Years Day. Click The PEER Center West-December 2013 for the full schedule.

Our WARMLINE, (614)358-TALK (8255), is available daily for non-crisis phone peer support.

Don't forget that The P.E.E.R. Center is a self-serve Ohio Benefit Bank site.  At both locations, peers may use our designated computer workstations to connect to programs and resources, such as food assistance, child care assistance, health coverage and much, much more.  The Ohio Benefit Bank portal is very user friendly and is available anytime during our operational hours.  No appointment needed.

If you are looking for ways that you can help our efforts, please take a look at our "You Can Help" page for the wide variety of suggestions for how you can participate in our efforts to continue instilling HOPE in the lives of our staff and Associates.  One additional way to help is to designate "PEER Center" under our non-profit organization # 91907 in the Kroger Community Rewards program.  You earn rewards as you shop, and your rewards help support us.  Thank you in advance!

Finally, December is not only special because it's the end of the year, we are always amazed by the number of significant religious and cultural holidays during this time of year. This confluence actually began when the beginning of Hanukkah and Thanksgiving Day fell on the same day this year. At the time of this writing, Christians are preparing for the beginning of Advent which is the official start of their Christmas season. December is also the time when Muslims have a special festival, Ashura, for commemoration and mourning of a fallen historical hero. Bodhi Day, which falls on December 8th is recognized by Buddhists as the day that the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautauma experienced enlightenment. There are many celebrations among pagans and others around the Winter Solstice, which marks the first official day of winter. Kwanzaa, a week long celebration throughout the world African community, takes us the rest of the way through New Years Day. It is as if the universe has decided that, at least for one month in the year, there is time and space to coexist.  We share this candle as a reminder to all of us to spread the light of love, hope, peace and joy throughout this month and all months to come.

The PEER Center family, the board, the staff and associates wish you and yours a safe and Happy Holiday Season!

November 2013

November finds us in the very middle of the Autumn season. We are still enjoying the fall color. Sundown comes even earlier now as we "fall back" into standard time. For many of us it is a time to begin thinking about the things we are grateful for.  We are a very diverse crew at The PEER Center. We come from many walks of life; we have life stories filled with joy, pain and challenge.  The one thing that we are pretty uniform about is that we are grateful for being on the recovery journey.  We are grateful for the people and circumstances that led to this journey. We are grateful for the opportunity to "pay forward" all that was poured into us so that we can exemplify HOPE for others

What are you grateful for? What are your hopes and dreams?                                                                                                                gratitude

These are the kinds of conversations that we have each day at The PEER Center. You are always welcome here!!

In November we will delve into yet another wellness dimension, Financial Wellness, which is defined as "satisfaction with current and future financial situationsThe East Center will begin an eight week course on "Money Basics", which is a is a financial self-sufficiency course designed for people who experience mental health issues. In this course we will increase our knowledge about money and finances, develop healthy financial goals and habits; and increase our confidence in our ability to handle our finances.  The great thing about this course, like all our activities at The PEER Center, is that is designed for peers, will be led by peers, and that we will all learn together.

Click on the EAST or NORTH links on the HOME or other pages on this website to review the full schedule of activities.  We value evolution, so our schedule and activities are constantly changing based on the needs and requests of our Associates and staff.

October 2013

The month of October brings to mind many images: pumpkins, brilliant fall tree landscapes, harvest, football Friday nights and costumed beggars of all sizes bidding us "trick or treat!!"

Cooler weather means we also break out the sweaters and light jackets.  It's the perfect weather for walking. Center, along with the rest of the nation recently recognized National Wellness Week 2013 . But wellness is a full time effort that doesn't stop when that week is over.  Drop by The P.E.E.R. August 2013

August arrives and collectively we grumble, "where did the summer go?"  Plans are already in swing for new adventures: starting or returning to school, moving on to the next or new thing.  Time is how we mark change. Time does not stand still, and nor should we.  Each day brings us a new opportunity to begin, to continue, to complete, or to move on to the next thing.  For those of us on the recovery journey, everyday that we do something for our wellness is a day of accomplishment, and it's a day to celebrate!!  Small steps; small gains; it's how it's done. It is how we get there. We just need to decide what or where is the there!!
